Да + Present: Хоћу да идем
After verbs such as хтети (want), морати (must), моћи (can), желети (wish), волети (like) and почињати (begin), Serbian usually adds да and a second verb in the present tense. When the same person does both actions, both verbs are in the same person:
- Хоћу да идем (I want to go)
- Морамо да радимо (We have to work)
- Деца почињу да читају (Children start reading)
Do not put the infinitive after да: say да идем, never да ићи.
In Serbia, да + present is the most frequent choice in speech. The plain infinitive without да is also standard, especially in writing: Морам ићи, Могу читати. In this lesson you practise the да form.
