Turkish · Suffix

-CI: people and trades

The suffix -cı / -ci / -cu / -cü turns a noun into a person who makes, sells or works with it, or who does it a lot: balık → balıkçı (fisherman), şarkı → şarkıcı (singer), yol → yolcu (passenger).

  • The vowel follows four-way vowel harmony: postacı, gazeteci, oyuncu, sütçü.
  • After a voiceless consonant (ç, f, h, k, p, s, ş, t) the c becomes ç: simitçi, işçi, kitapçı, gözlükçü.
  • The base does not soften: kitap → kitapçı, never kitabcı.
  • Case and possessive endings come after it: dişçiye (to the dentist), kitapçıdan (from the bookshop), kapıcısı (its doorman).

The same word often names both the person and the shop: kitapçı is the bookseller and also the bookshop.

Examples

  • Pazarcı bize taze domates verdi.
