Tener, Hacer, Estar or Hay?

English uses to be for weather, body feelings and age, but Spanish uses four different verbs:

  • hace + noun for the weather in general: hace calor, hace frío, hace buen tiempo.
  • hay + noun for something that is present in the air, the sky or on the ground: hay niebla, hay nieve, hay humedad.
  • está + adjective or gerund for the state of the sky or of a thing: está nublado, está lloviendo, la sopa está fría (the soup is cold).
  • tener + noun for how a person feels and for age: tengo frío (I'm cold), tienes hambre (you're hungry), tiene veinte años (he is twenty).

Quick test: a person who feels something takes tengo, tienes, tiene; the weather takes hace, hay or está. Do not say estoy frío for 'I feel cold': it means your body is cold to the touch.
