Spanish · Possessive Adjectives
Mío, Tuyo, Suyo
Spanish has a second, stressed set of possessives. Unlike mi/tu/su, they go after the noun or after ser, and they agree in gender and number with the thing owned, not with the owner:
- mío, mía, míos, mías (mine)
- tuyo, tuya, tuyos, tuyas (yours, for tú)
- suyo, suya, suyos, suyas (his, hers, theirs, yours for usted/ustedes)
- nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, nuestras (ours)
After ser they answer "whose?": Esta mochila es mía. (This backpack is mine.) After a noun they mean "of mine, of yours": un amigo mío (a friend of mine). With el, la, los, las they replace a noun you already mentioned: Mi coche es rojo y el tuyo es azul. (My car is red and yours is blue.)
