Irregular Subjunctive Forms

Many common verbs have an irregular present subjunctive. Most of them take the stem of the yo form of the present indicative and add the subjunctive endings: tengo → tenga, hago → haga, digo → diga, vengo → venga, salgo → salga, pongo → ponga, conozco → conozca. Stem-changing verbs keep their change: pueda, quiera (but podamos, queramos).

Six verbs are completely irregular and have to be learned by heart:

ser → sea, estar → esté, ir → vaya
haber → haya, saber → sepa, dar → dé

Use them after wishes, hopes and doubts: Quiero que seas feliz. (I want you to be happy.) No creo que vaya. (I don't think he's going.) After ojalá the past subjunctive (ojalá hubiera) is also possible for wishes that are less likely.
