Conditional: by, keby, aby

The Slovak conditional is the l-form of the verb (as in the past tense) plus by. In the 1st and 2nd person, add som, si, sme, ste: chcel by som (I would like), mohli by ste (could you), bolo by (it would be).

  • Polite requests: Chcela by som kávu. Mohli by ste mi pomôcť?
  • Unreal conditions start with keby (if): Keby som mal čas, išiel by som s vami (If I had time, I would go with you).
  • Purpose and wishes use aby (so that, that) + l-form: Učím sa, aby som zložil skúšku. Mama chce, aby si prišiel skôr.

The l-form agrees with the subject: -l, -la, -lo, -li. The helpers stay together in a fixed order: by som, keby si, aby sme.
