Tu Commands: Fala! Não Fales!

Use the tu command to tell a friend, a child or a family member what to do.

• Affirmative: use the present-tense ele/ela form: fala (speak), come (eat), abre (open). Irregular verbs follow the same rule: faz, diz, vem, põe, vai, dá, lê, ouve. Only ser breaks it: sê (be).
• Negative: use não + the present subjunctive. Start from the eu form and drop the -o. Then -ar verbs take -es and -er/-ir verbs take -as: falo → não fales, como → não comas, faço → não faças, digo → não digas, venho → não venhas, ponho → não ponhas. Irregular: não vás, não dês, não sejas.
• Pronouns: in an affirmative command the pronoun comes after the verb, with a hyphen (senta-te, levanta-te). After não it moves in front of the verb (não te sentes).
