Quanto & Quale

Quanto (how much, how many) agrees with the noun after it:

  • quanto + masculine singular: Quanto zucchero vuoi?
  • quanta + feminine singular: Quanta acqua bevi?
  • quanti + masculine plural: Quanti fratelli hai?
  • quante + feminine plural: Quante persone vengono?

A preposition goes in front: Da quanto tempo...? (For how long...?), Di quanti soldi...?

When quanto goes with a verb and means 'how much' (a price, an amount), it never changes: Quanto costano i biglietti? (How much do the tickets cost?)

Quale (which) has only two forms: quale for a singular noun of either gender (quale treno, quale città) and quali for plurals (quali scarpe). Before è it becomes qual è, written without an apostrophe.

Examples

  • Quanti studenti ci sono in classe?
  • Quanta frutta mangi ogni giorno?
  • Da quanto tempo aspetti?
  • Quale gelato vuoi?
  • Quali film ti piacciono?
