Italian · Gender, Number & Agreement

Adjective Agreement

Adjectives agree with their noun in gender and number.

  • Adjectives in -o have four forms: alto, alta, alti, alte (un ragazzo alto, due ragazze alte).
  • Adjectives in -e have two forms, the same for both genders: gentile, gentili (una madre gentile, dei padri gentili).
  • With -co/-go, the feminine plural always keeps the hard sound: bianche, lunghe, simpatiche. The masculine plural is usually -chi/-ghi (bianchi, lunghi, stanchi), but -ci when the stress falls on the third-to-last syllable: simpatico → simpatici.
  • For a mixed group of masculine and feminine nouns, use the masculine plural: Marco e Anna sono stanchi (Marco and Anna are tired).
  • A few colours never change: blu, rosa, viola (gli occhi blu).

Examples

  • La mia casa è piccola e luminosa.
  • I bambini sono stanchi.
  • Le lezioni di storia sono interessanti.
  • Paolo e Giulia sono simpatici.
  • Ho comprato due borse blu.
