Past Conditional

The past conditional mostly says what would have happened but didn't. Use the conditional of avere or essere + past participle: avrei mangiato, sarei partito. With essere the participle agrees with the subject: Anna sarebbe venuta, le ragazze sarebbero venute.

  • Regret: Avrei voluto venire, ma ero malato (I'd have liked to come, but I was ill).
  • Advice that comes too late: Avresti dovuto chiamarmi (You should have called me).
  • The future seen from the past, after dire, promettere, credere: Ha detto che sarebbe arrivato alle otto (He said he'd arrive at eight). English says would, but Italian needs the past conditional here.
  • After se + pluperfect subjunctive: Se l'avessi saputo, ti avrei aiutato (If I'd known, I'd have helped you).

Examples

  • Avrei voluto studiare medicina, ma non avevo i soldi.
  • Mi ha scritto che sarebbe tornata a settembre.
  • Avresti dovuto portare l'ombrello.
  • Se fossi uscito prima, non avresti perso l'autobus.
  • Le mie sorelle sarebbero rimaste volentieri un altro giorno.
