Italian · Impersonal Si & Passive

Passive Voice

The passive puts the thing acted on first: auxiliary + past participle, and the participle agrees with the subject like an adjective: la lettera è scritta, le lettere sono scritte.

  • essere works in every tense: è letto, è stato arrestato, sarà costruito, era stata aperta.
  • venire replaces essere only in simple (one-word) tenses and stresses the action: vengono spedite, veniva portato, verrà ascoltata. Compound tenses use essere.
  • andare + participle means something must be done: va compilato (must be filled in), vanno prese (must be taken).
  • The agent takes da, joined with any article: dal cameriere, dalla direttrice, dai nonni, but plain da milioni di persone.
  • In history and literature you also meet the passato remoto: fu dipinta.
