Past or Subjunctive? hatte or hätte

For these verbs the Konjunktiv II looks almost the same as the simple past. The only difference is the umlaut, plus an extra -e for sein:

• hatte (had) → hätte (would have)
• war (was) → wäre (would be)
• konnte (was able to) → könnte (could, would be able to)
• musste (had to) → müsste (would have to)
• wurde (became) → würde (would)

The sentence gives you the clue. A past time marker such as gestern, letztes Jahr, früher or als Kind points to a real past fact: Gestern hatte ich keine Zeit. An unreal wenn-clause, ich wünschte or an deiner Stelle points to something imagined: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.
