Passive voice (être + participe passé)

The passive voice puts the thing that undergoes the action first: Ce roman a été écrit par Victor Hugo (This novel was written by Victor Hugo). You build it with être + past participle, and only être shows the tense:

• présent: est / sont + participle
• passé composé: a été / ont été + participle
• futur simple: sera / seront + participle

The participle agrees with the subject like an adjective: add -e for feminine and -s for plural (La ville a été détruite, Les portes ont été fermées). The form été itself never changes. The doer is introduced by par. After verbs of feeling such as aimer or respecter, French usually uses de instead (Elle est aimée de tous).
