French · Future Tenses

Futur antérieur and the future after quand

After quand, lorsque, dès que and une fois que, French uses the future, not the present as in English: Quand il fera beau, nous irons à la plage (When it's nice, we'll go to the beach).

The futur antérieur (will have done) is the futur simple of avoir or être + past participle: tu auras fini, elle sera partie. With être the participle agrees: ils seront arrivés.

Use it for a future action that is finished before another one:

  • after après que and une fois que: Une fois que tu auras lu ce livre, prête-le-moi.
  • with depuis: Quand tu rentreras, le film aura commencé depuis vingt minutes.

When the two moments almost coincide (arriver, recevoir), both tenses are correct: Quand tu arriveras / seras arrivé, appelle-moi.

Examples

  • Quand je serai grand, je serai pilote.
  • Dès que nous aurons fini, nous partirons.
  • Lorsqu'il fera froid, nous resterons à la maison.
  • Demain soir, elle aura terminé son rapport.
