Countries and cities: à, en, au, aux

To say in or to a place, French chooses the preposition from the place name, and the same word works for both: je vais au Japon (I'm going to Japan), j'habite au Japon (I live in Japan).

  • à + city: à Paris, à Londres
  • en + feminine country (most end in -e): en France, en Italie, en Chine
  • en + masculine country starting with a vowel: en Iran, en Israël
  • au + masculine country: au Canada, au Japon, au Maroc
  • aux + plural country: aux États-Unis, aux Pays-Bas

Watch the exceptions to the -e rule: le Mexique and le Cambodge are masculine, so au Mexique and au Cambodge.
