Verb + Preposition

Many verbs need a fixed preposition before their object. It often differs from other languages, so learn the verb and its preposition together:

  • on: depend on, rely on, insist on, concentrate on, spend (money) on
  • for: wait for, pay for, ask for, apply for, thank someone for, apologise for, search for
  • to: listen to, belong to, write to, reply to, happen to
  • at: look at, laugh at, smile at
  • in: believe in, succeed in
  • with: agree with (a person)
  • of: consist of, remind someone of
  • about: care about, worry about

In questions the preposition stays with the verb and often goes to the end: Who are you waiting for? After a preposition, a verb takes the -ing form: He insisted on paying. Say depend on, never depend of.

Examples

  • It depends on the price.
  • We're waiting for a taxi.
  • I often listen to the radio.
  • Who does this coat belong to?
  • He apologised for the mistake.
