To Be: am, is, are

The verb be has three forms in the present:

  • I am (I'm)
  • he / she / it is (he's, she's, it's), also after singular nouns: My sister is a nurse.
  • you / we / they are (you're, we're, they're), also after plural nouns: My parents are on holiday.

Negatives add not: I am not (I'm not), is not (isn't), are not (aren't). There is no short form amn't.

Questions put the verb before the subject: Am I late? Is she your sister? Are you ready? A question word comes first: What is your name?

Short answers repeat the verb: Yes, I am. No, it isn't.
