Passive in Other Tenses
The passive works in every tense: put be into the tense you need and add the past participle.
- future: will be + participle, or is going to be (The results will be announced on Friday.)
- present continuous: is/are being + participle for something happening now (The road is being repaired.)
- present perfect: has/have been + participle (My phone has been stolen!)
- past continuous: was/were being + participle (The car was being washed when it started to rain.)
- after a modal: must / can / should + be + participle (This form must be signed.)
Put not after the first helper verb: haven't been cleaned. With just and already, American English often uses the past simple instead: The results were just published.
Examples
- The new library will be opened next spring.
- Our house is being painted this week.
- My phone has been stolen!
- Children must be accompanied by an adult.
- The car was being washed when it started to rain.
