Prepositions are relational words. They appear before nouns and indicate the relation of the noun or noun phrase to the rest of the sentence. Here are a few examples:

1. I walked around the park. (What is my relation to the park? “Around” it.)

2. She sat in/on the chair. (What is her relation to the chair? “In” or “on” it. (Important note here: The use of some prepositions is geographical. For instance, in this case, depending on where a native English speaker is from, some people will say “sat in a chair” and some people will say “sat on a chair.” Both are correct; they are simply regional variations in the use of prepositions.)

They are also a “closed” class of words, meaning that there are a set number of prepositions in English and those are the only prepositions in English and this list is not additive in the way that nouns, adjectives, and adverbs are (in which new ones are constantly appearing or being created).
