Comparatives
Use a comparative + than to compare two things: My brother is taller than me.
- One-syllable adjectives add -er: tall → taller, cheap → cheaper, old → older.
- One-syllable adjectives ending in one vowel + one consonant double the consonant: hot → hotter, big → bigger, thin → thinner.
- Adjectives ending in consonant + -y change it to -ier, even with two syllables: heavy → heavier, easy → easier, busy → busier.
- A final -e only adds -r: nice → nicer, safe → safer.
- Most other adjectives with two or more syllables use more: more interesting, more expensive, more comfortable.
Never use both at once: say bigger, not more bigger.
Examples
- Trains are faster than buses.
- This room is bigger than my old bedroom.
- The second question is easier than the first.
- This film is more interesting than the last one.
