Do & Does: Questions and Negatives

In the present simple, questions and negatives need the helper verb do.

  • do / don't with I, you, we, they and plural nouns: Do you live here? I don't eat meat.
  • does / doesn't with he, she, it and singular nouns: Does she speak French? He doesn't drive.

The full forms are do not and does not; in speech we usually say don't and doesn't.

After do or does the main verb stays in its base form, without -s: Does she speak? (not speaks), He doesn't eat meat (not eats).

A question word comes first: Where does your sister work? How often do you go to the gym?

In questions and negatives, the verb be does not use do: Are you ready? She isn't here.

Examples

  • Do you like tea?
  • Where does he live?
