Kde, kam, odkud: Asking Where

Czech has four words where English just says where. The verb and the answer tell you which one to use.

  • Kde? asks where something is or happens: Kde je kočka? Pod postelí. (Where is the cat? Under the bed.)
  • Kam? asks where someone is going or where something is put: Kam půjdeme? Do kina. (Where shall we go? To the cinema.)
  • Odkud? asks where something comes from: Odkud jede vlak? Z Brna. (Where is the train coming from? From Brno.)
  • Kudy? asks which way: Kudy se jde na nádraží? Přes park. (Which way to the station? Through the park.)

Tip: an answer with v or na + a place where you are goes with kde. An answer with do, na or k + a goal goes with kam. z and od go with odkud, and přes, po, kolem, podél go with kudy.

Examples

  • Kde je nádraží?
  • Kam jedete na dovolenou?
  • Odkud je ten čaj? Z Číny.
  • Kudy se jde do centra?
