Comparative and Superlative of Adjectives

All comparative and superlative adjectives end with -íand are therefore soft adjectives inflected according to the model adjective jarní.

1. Positive of adjectives
Positive expresses the basic degree of the characteristic. When comparing, it means equal measure.

Form: (stejně) + adjective + jako (as)
Petr je stejně starý jako Pavel. (Peter is as old as Paul.)
Petr je stejně vysoký jako Pavel. (Peter is as tall as Paul.)
Jana je vysoká jako Marie. (Jane is as tall as Maria.)

The word stejně (as) can be omitted from the sentence.

2. Comparative of adjectives
Comparative is used for comparison - smaller or larger degree of the characteristic.

It is formed by suffixes:
-ejší
-ější
-ší
-í

The first two suffixes are the most common. However, there is no simple rule to choose the correct suffix.

rychlý (fast) - rychlejší (faster)
pomalý (slow) - pomalejší (slower)
zajímavý (interesting) - zajímavější (more interesting)
zábavný (fun) - zábavnější (more fun)

Here are some basic rules:
If the stem of an adjective ends in -s-, -z-, -ch-, or -h-, there is a corresponding consonant alternation when the -ší is added.
bohatý (rich) - bohatší
čistý (clean) - čistší
drahý (expensive) - dražší
mladý (young) - mladší

Adjectives that end in -oký and -eký also take a -ší comparative but first drop the -oký or
-eký ending:
hluboký (deep) - hlubší
široký (wide) - širší
vysoký (tall) - vyšší

Many adjectives that end in -ký fall into one of two following types:
The first type adds a -ší ending for the comparative with the -ký being dropped and the stem vowel shortened.
blízký (close) - bližší
krátký (short) - kratší
těžký (difficult) - těžší

The second type replaces the -ký by -čí to form the comparative.
hezký (beautiful) - hezčí
lehký (easy) - lehčí
měkký (soft) - měkčí

And finally, there are irregular comparatives:
dobrý (good) – lepší
špatný (bad) – horší
velký (big) – větší
malý (small) – menší
snadný (easy) – snazší
dlouhý (long) - delší

A comparative can be used independently to soften a certain statement:
Paní Nováková je stará. (Mrs. Nováková is old.)
Paní Nováková je starší. (Mrs. Nováková is older, meaning she is an old lady, but I want to be polite and don't want to say it.)

BÝT (to be) + comperative + NEŽ (than)
Petr je rychlejší než Pavel. (Peter is faster than Paul.)
Banán je dražší než jablko. (A banana is more expensive than an apple.)

3. Superlative of adjectives
Superlative expresses the highest (or lowest) degree of the characteristic.
It is formed by the prefix nej-, which is added to the comparative.

1. krásný (beautiful) - 2. krásnější - 3. nejkrásnější
1. hladký (smooth) - 2. hladší - 3. nejhladší

VÍCE (more) - NEJVÍCE (the most)
We can also form the comparative and superlative forms by using the words více (more) and nejvíce (the most)

spokojený (satisfied) - více spokojený - nejvíce spokojený

The lower and the lowest degree of a characteristic are formed by using the corresponding degree of an adjective of opposite meaning:
velký (big) - menší (smaller) - nejmenší (the smallest)
where menší is the second degree from malý (small)

If the opposing adjective is not distinct, the second and third degrees are formed descriptively by using words méně (less) and nejméně (the least)
zelený (green) - méně zelený (less green) - nejméně zelený (the least green)
