Conditionals

The conditional expresses an event occurring when a specific condition is met.

The Present Conditional
Form: past participle and special forms of the verb být (to be).

Past participle:
Infinitive (minus ending -t) + suffix (l - li, la - ly, lo - la)

past participle for: dělat (to do) > děla- + suffixes
masculine (singular, plural): dělal - dělali
feminine (singular, plural): dělala - dělaly
neuter (singular, plural): dělalo - dělala

Být for the conditional
1. person (singular, plural): bych - bychom
2. person (singular, plural): bys - byste
3. person (singular, plural): by - by

Dělal bych – I would do.
masculine for "dělat" (to do)
1. person (singular, plural): dělal bych - dělali bychom
2. person (singular, plural): dělal bys - dělali byste
3. person (singular, plural): dělal by - dělali by

feminine for "dělat" (to do)
1. person (singular, plural): dělala bych - dělaly bychom
2. person (singular, plural): dělala bys - dělaly byste
3. person (singular, plural): dělala by - dělaly by

neuter for "dělat" (to do)
1. person (singular, plural): dělalo bych - dělala bychom
2. person (singular, plural): dělalo bys - dělala byste
3. person (singular, plural): dělalo by - dělala by

The form of být for conditional can also stand before the main verb (usually if the subject is not expressed):
Já bych jedl. I would eat.
Jedl bych. I would eat.

The Past Conditional
The Czech language also has a past conditional. However, it is not used very often since it can be replaced by the present conditional.

Form: past participle of "být" + the special form for "být" + past participle of the main verb

Byl bych dělal – I would have done.

masculine for "dělat" (to do)
1. person (singular, plural): byl bych dělal - byli bychom dělali
2. person (singular, plural): byl bys dělal - byli byste dělali
3. person (singular, plural): byl by dělal - byli by dělali

feminine for "dělat" (to do)
1. person (singular, plural): byla bych dělala - byly bychom dělaly
2. person (singular, plural): byla bys dělala - byly byste dělaly
3. person (singular, plural): byla by dělala - byly by dělaly

neuter for "dělat" (to do)
1. person (singular, plural): bylo bych dělalo - byla bychom dělala
2. person (singular, plural): bylo bys dělalo - byla byste dělala
3. person (singular, plural): bylo by dělalo - byla by dělala

"By" can also become a part of conjugations "aby" (so that) and "kdyby" (if). Therefore, these conjunctions take the same endings:
Kdybych nepracoval, nedostal bych výplatu. If I didn't work, I would get no wages.

Conditionals of the Reflexive verbs
Reflexive verb = main verb + "se" or "si"
posadit se (to sit down, to make oneself sit down)

In conditional, "se", or "si" often moves before the main verb (it usually happens when the subject is expressed in the sentence). Otherwise, it stands behind ""bych, bys, by,...""

Posadil bych se na stůl. - I would sit on the table.
Já bych se posadil na stůl - I would sit on the table.
