怎么 or 怎么样

怎么 and 怎么样 both mean 'how', but they sit in different places.

• 怎么 + verb asks for the way to do something: 怎么走？ (how do I get there?), 怎么读？ (how is it read?), 怎么说？ (how do you say it?). Fixed phrase: 怎么办？ (what shall we do?).
• 怎么样 closes the sentence and asks what something is like: 你最近怎么样？ (how have you been?), 这个电影怎么样？ (how is this film?). After a suggestion it means 'how about it?': 我们去吃饭，怎么样？
• After a verb + 得, use 怎么样: 你考得怎么样？ (how did your exam go?)

Rule of thumb: if a verb follows the gap, choose 怎么; if the question ends at the gap, choose 怎么样.
