Prepositions with Pronoun Suffixes

Arabic has no verb for to have. Instead you attach a pronoun suffix to a preposition: عندي سيارة (I have a car), literally at me is a car.

  • عند and لدى: to have, to own (لدى is more formal)
  • مع: to have on you right now (معي قلم = I have a pen on me)
  • لـ: to belong to (هذا لي = this is mine)

The suffixes are the same as on nouns: ـي، ـكَ، ـكِ، ـه، ـها، ـنا، ـكم، ـهم. The other prepositions take them too: فيه (in it), منه (from him), عنها (about her).

Watch the spelling changes: على → عليه, إلى → إليه, لدى → لديه (the final ى becomes ي), من → مني and عن → عني (the ن is doubled), and لـ + أنا → لي.

Examples

  • عندي أخ وأختان.
  • هل معك هاتف؟
  • هذا البيت لنا.
  • لديه عمل كثير اليوم.
  • كتبت إليها رسالة طويلة.
