Asking Questions

Arabic question words stand at the start of the sentence, and the rest keeps normal word order. Choose the word that fits the answer:

• ماذا what (before a verb): ماذا تشرب؟ (What do you drink?). ما is also correct here.
• من who, لمن whose / for whom
• أين where, من أين where from
• متى when, كيف how
• لماذا why, answered with لأن (because)
• كم how many / how much: كم عمرك؟ (How old are you?)
• أي which, followed by a noun: أي لون تحب؟ (Which colour do you like?)
• هل makes a yes/no question, and the answer starts with نعم (yes) or لا (no): هل أنت طالب؟ (Are you a student?)
