Grammar lessons
Study “değil or yok?”: read the rule, then use it to complete three sentences from the lesson.
Who writes the lessons?
Professional language teachers write the vocabulary and grammar. If you spot a mistake, long-press the word to report it. Our team checks every report.
Each lesson explains the rule with examples, then you practice it in sentences.
değil or yok?
Turkish has two different words for not:
- değil negates a noun, an adjective or mine/yours: Ben doktor değilim (I'm not a doctor), Bu çanta benim değil (This bag isn't mine). It takes the personal endings: değilim, değilsin, değil, değiliz, değilsiniz, değiller (-ler is optional).
- var (there is, I have) and yok (there isn't, I don't have) talk about existence and possession: Evde süt yok (There's no milk at home), İki kardeşim var (I have two siblings).
- Questions: var mı? (is there…?) and yok mu? (isn't there…?). The tag değil mi? means …right?: Hava güzel, değil mi?
Hiç works with both: hiç yorgun değilim (I'm not tired at all), hiç süt yok (there's no milk at all).
