Rád, rada, radi: saying what you like
To say you like doing something, Slovak puts rád before the verb. Rád works like an adjective, so it agrees with the subject:
- rád: a man or boy (Peter rád číta)
- rada: a woman or girl (Moja sestra rada tancuje)
- rado: a neuter noun (Dievča sa rado hrá)
- radi: men or a mixed group; rady: women, girls, animals, things
With a noun, use mať rád + accusative: Katka má rada čokoládu (Katka likes chocolate), Mám ťa rád / rada (I love you). A woman always says rada; Ona rád is a mistake.
To compare, use the forms that never change: radšej (rather, prefer) and najradšej (like best): Čaj pijem radšej ako kávu (I prefer tea to coffee).
