Reflexive: Me, Te, Se, Nos
Reflexive verbs describe things you do to yourself, like getting up, washing or getting dressed. In the dictionary they end in -se: levantarse (to get up), llamarse (to be called). When you conjugate them, -se becomes a small pronoun that goes before the verb and matches the subject:
- yo → me levanto
- tú → te levantas
- él, ella, usted → se levanta
- nosotros → nos levantamos
- ellos, ellas, ustedes → se levantan
The verb ending tells you which pronoun to use: acuesto needs me, acostamos needs nos. Se covers he, she, they, usted and ustedes. Some verbs simply always take the pronoun: acordarse (to remember), quedarse (to stay), irse (to leave), divertirse (to have fun). In Spain, vosotros uses os: os levantáis.
