Condicional Simple

The condicional simple expresses what would happen. Add the endings -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían to the whole infinitive: hablaría, comería, viviría.

Some verbs use an irregular stem, the same one as in the future: podr-, querr-, dir-, har-, tendr-, vendr-, saldr-, pondr-, sabr-, habr- (diría, haría, tendría).

Use it for:

  • polite wishes: Me gustaría un café (I'd like a coffee)
  • advice: Yo en tu lugar no diría nada (If I were you, I wouldn't say anything)
  • imagined situations: ¿Qué harías con un millón? (What would you do with a million?)
  • the future seen from the past: Dijo que vendría (He said he would come)

After a past verb like dijo que, the imperfect is also possible for planned events: dijo que venía.

  • Me gustaría hablar con usted un momento.
  • Yo que tú, no lo haría.
  • ¿Qué harías sin tu teléfono?
  • Nos dijeron que llegarían tarde.
  • Con más dinero, viajaríamos por todo el mundo.
