und, aber, oder, denn, sondern

The conjunctions und (and), aber (but), oder (or), denn (because) and sondern (but rather) join two parts of equal rank. They do not count as the first position, so the clause after them keeps normal main-clause order with the verb second: …, denn ich bin müde; … und dann frühstücke ich.

• und adds something, oder offers a choice.
• aber marks a contrast: Ich möchte kommen, aber ich habe keine Zeit (I'd like to come, but I have no time).
• denn gives a reason: Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank (I'm staying home because I'm ill).
• sondern corrects something negated with nicht or kein: Das ist kein Tee, sondern Kaffee (that's not tea but coffee).

Watch the pairs zwar … aber and entweder … oder. Put a comma before aber, denn and sondern.
