Word Order: Questions & Adverbs

English sentences follow a fixed word order.

  • Wh- questions with a main verb: question word + do/does + subject + verb: Where do you live? What does he do?
  • Wh- questions with be: question word + be + subject: Where are you from? How old is she?
  • Frequency adverbs such as always, never and often go before the main verb: I always have breakfast. He never drinks coffee.

The question word always comes first. Never put the adverb between the verb and its object: say She never eats meat, not She eats never meat. Often can also stand at the end of the sentence: We play tennis often.

Examples

  • Where do your parents live?
  • What does your sister do?
  • Where is your hotel?
  • We always go to bed early.
  • They never eat fish.
