Question Tags
A question tag is a short question at the end of a sentence. We use it to check information or to invite the listener to agree.
- Use the same auxiliary as the sentence (be, do, did, can, will, have) and a pronoun: She can drive, can't she?
- A positive sentence takes a negative tag, a negative sentence takes a positive tag: It's cold, isn't it? You don't eat meat, do you?
- If the sentence has no auxiliary, use do, does or did: They went home, didn't they?
Special tags: I'm … aren't I?, Let's … shall we?, and after an order or request will you? (also would/could/can you). After a negative order use only will you: Don't forget, will you? Negative tags are normally contracted.
