English (UK) · Present Perfect
For, Since & Ago
Use for with a length of time: for two hours, for ten years, for ages. Use since with the starting point: since 2018, since Monday, since I was a child. With the present perfect, both say how long something has lasted up to now: I have known her for six years. I have known her since we were at school.
- for + a period: works in any tense (I lived in Rome for three years.)
- since + a point in time or a clause: mostly with the present perfect, and in It's been three years since I last saw him.
- ago comes after the period and goes with the past simple: two years ago, five minutes ago. It counts back from now to a finished moment.
Never say since three years: say for three years. And never have moved here ten years ago: say moved here ten years ago.
Examples

- She has worked at this school since 2020.
- We moved to this town three years ago.
