There Is / There Are

Man verwendet there is und there are, um zu sagen, dass etwas existiert oder sich irgendwo befindet, oft wenn man es zum ersten Mal erwähnt.

• there is (there's) + Substantiv im Singular: There is a bank near the station. (Es gibt eine Bank in der Nähe des Bahnhofs.)
• there is + nicht zählbares Substantiv: There is some milk in the fridge. (Es ist etwas Milch im Kühlschrank.)
• there are + Substantiv im Plural: There are two cats in the garden. (Es sind zwei Katzen im Garten.)

Bei a lot of richtet man sich nach dem Substantiv: a lot of cars → are, a lot of snow → is.

Verneinung: there isn't / there aren't, oft mit any: There isn't any milk. There aren't any buses. (Es ist keine Milch da. Es fahren keine Busse.)

Fragen: das Verb steht zuerst: Is there a bank near here? (Gibt es hier in der Nähe eine Bank?) Are there any shops? (Gibt es Geschäfte?) Nach How many verwendet man are there.

Kurzantworten: Yes, there is. No, there aren't. (Ja. Nein.)
