De or Het: Everyday Nouns

Dutch has two words for "the": de and het. About two thirds of all nouns take de, the rest take het. For the everyday nouns you meet first there is no reliable rule, so learn every noun together with its article. - de: de tafel, de stoel, de sleutel, de fiets, de trein, de stad, de straat, de deur, de kamer, de week - het: het huis, het station, het menu, het boek, het kind, het meisje, het water, het brood, het geld, het weer - All plurals take de: het boek → de boeken, het kind → de kinderen, het huis → de huizen. Nouns for people are usually de (de man, de vrouw), but het kind and het meisje are exceptions. Tip: always write a new noun in your notebook with de or het in front of it.
