Days of the Week

Certain articles can appear before days of the week. However, days of the week can also be without an article.
The same sentence with a specific article before a weekday and without the use of the article before a weekday have not the same meaning. Example: the sentence '' il sabato vado in città '' (= Saturday I go to town / every Saturday I go to town) and '' sabato vado in città '' (= I go to town on Saturday ) have not the same meaning.

A certain article before a weekday means every weekday (e.g. every Saturday = ogni sabato; every morning = ogni mattina).
➔ certain article + weekday = every weekday

Day of the week without a specific article can mean either this, next or the last weekday. So a certain day of the week is meant with no regularity (e.g. this Saturday = questo sabato).
➔ only weekday = next or last weekday.

The rules that determine the exact definite article before the day of the week (noun) are the same as already explained in the chapters '' Singular '' and '' Plural '' (e.g. il sabat o ➔ Beginning with a consonant + vowel and ending with - o ➔ masculine noun ➔ il).

All days of the week except domenica (= Sunday) have the masculine article il.
➔ il lunedì (= Monday), il martedì (= Tuesday), il mercoledì (= Wednesday), il giovedì (= Thursday), il venerdì (= Friday), il sabato (= Saturday), la domenica (= Sunday).

Additional information:

  • Month names always appear without an article, unless one speaks of the next or past month in exactly the same way, if the month name is followed by an adjective (eg. Gennaio è un mese freddo or torno a casa a dicembre ➔ no article; il settembre scorso sono stato a Roma or il prossimo marzo vado a scuola ➔ certain article il).
  • pomeriggio (= afternoon) is usually formed with nel ➔ e.g. nel pomeriggio vado in città.

Examples

  • Il sabato vado a Roma.
    Il lunedì vado in supermercato.
    Questo martedì ho libro.
  • la domenica
La domenica vado da mia nonna.
    Ci vediamo questa domenica.
