Verb + -ing

Auf manche englische Verben folgt die -ing-Form des nächsten Verbs, niemals to + Verb:

  • enjoy, mind, finish, keep, avoid
  • suggest, consider, deny, miss, imagine, give up

I enjoy swimming. (nicht I enjoy to swim) Would you mind opening the window?

Nach einer Präposition steht das Verb immer in der -ing-Form: good at drawing, before going, after finishing, without saying, thank you for helping. Bei look forward to ist to eine Präposition, daher folgt auch hier -ing: I'm looking forward to meeting you.

Schreibweise: Ein stummes -e entfällt (write → writing), und der letzte Konsonant wird verdoppelt, wenn eine betonte Silbe auf einen Vokal + einen Konsonanten endet (swim → swimming, forget → forgetting).

Beispiele

  • I enjoy cooking for my friends.
  • Would you mind closing the door?
  • She kept talking during the lesson.
  • We're looking forward to seeing you.
  • He left without paying.
