Is oder are? Unzählbare und Pluralnomen

Unzählbare Nomen stehen mit einem Singular-Verb: is, has, was. Das gilt auch, wenn das Nomen auf -s endet:

  • The news is gut. (nicht the news are)
  • This furniture is alt. My money is hier. Physics is schwer.
  • Dasselbe gilt für advice, information, luggage, homework, weather, traffic und hair.

Manche Nomen sind immer im Plural und stehen mit are. Viele davon bezeichnen zweiteilige Dinge oder Personengruppen:

  • jeans, shorts, glasses, sunglasses, scissors, clothes, stairs
  • The police are hier. The people are freundlich.

Um über ein einzelnes zweiteiliges Ding zu sprechen, verwende a pair of: This pair of jeans is neu.

Beispiele

  • The news is on at nine o'clock.
  • My glasses are on the table.
  • This information is very useful.
  • The police are looking for him.
  • Your clothes are in the washing machine.
