Englisch (UK) · Modalverben
Can, Could, Be able to
Verwende can + Grundform des Verbs für Fähigkeit in der Gegenwart: She can swim. (Sie kann schwimmen.) Die Verneinung ist can't oder cannot. Für Fähigkeit in der Vergangenheit verwendest du could und couldn't: When I was five, I could read. (Als ich fünf war, konnte ich lesen.) It was so dark that we couldn't see anything. (Es war so dunkel, dass wir nichts sehen konnten.)
Can hat keinen Infinitiv und kein Partizip, daher wird in anderen Zeiten be able to benutzt:
- Zukunft: will be able to, won't be able to (Will you be able to come? Wirst du kommen können?)
- Perfekt: have been able to (I haven't been able to sleep. Ich konnte nicht schlafen.)
- nach einem anderen Verb: I'd love to be able to dance. (Ich würde gerne tanzen können.)
Setze niemals to nach can oder could: I can swim, nicht I can to swim.

- She can't drive yet.
- My dad could dance really well when he was young.
- We couldn't find the hotel.
