Englisch (UK) · Bindewörter
And, but, or, so, because
Diese fünf kurzen Wörter verbinden Wörter und Sätze. Jedes hat seine eigene Aufgabe:
- and fügt etwas hinzu: My mum and dad are at work.
- but zeigt einen Gegensatz oder eine Überraschung: It's cheap, but it's good.
- or bietet eine Wahl: Tea or coffee? Nach einem Befehl bedeutet es „sonst“: Hurry, or we'll be late.
- so nennt das Ergebnis: It was dark, so I turned on the light.
- because nennt den Grund: I'm hungry because I missed lunch.
so und because weisen in entgegengesetzte Richtungen: der Grund steht nach because, das Ergebnis nach so. Vor but und so steht ein Komma, wenn sie zwei Sätze verbinden, vor because meist nicht.
Beispiele
- I wanted to go out, but it was raining.
- We were late, so we took a taxi.
