Plusquamperfekt

Das Plusquamperfekt bildet man mit had + Partizip Perfekt: had gone, had seen, had finished. Die Form ist für jedes Subjekt gleich (I had, she had, they had). Man benutzt es für eine Handlung, die vor einem anderen Zeitpunkt in der Vergangenheit abgeschlossen war, wenn die Reihenfolge wichtig ist:

  • by the time / by + Zeitangabe in der Vergangenheit: By the time I got home, everyone had gone to bed.
  • already / just mit einem Zeitpunkt in der Vergangenheit: When we arrived, the concert had already started. Das Simple Past (the concert started) würde bedeuten, dass es genau dann begann, als wir ankamen.
  • never ... before: He was nervous because he had never flown before.

Die Verneinung bildet man mit had not / hadn't: We hadn't eaten all day. In Fragen steht had zuerst: Had you ever tried sushi?

Beispiele

  • When I got to the cinema, the film had already started.
  • By the time we arrived, the restaurant had closed.
  • She had never eaten sushi before her trip to Japan.
  • I hadn't finished my work when my boss called.
  • Had you ever met him before the party?
